PRESTON CRISSEY, YANKTON COUNTY SHERIFF

Sheriff Preston Crissey was sworn in as the Yankton County Sheriff on January 3, 2023, bringing more than a decade of dedicated law enforcement experience to the office. His career began in 2010, serving as a Deputy Sheriff in Aurora and Bon Homme counties before moving to Yankton, South Dakota. He went on to serve with the Yankton Police Department, where he held several key roles, including Patrol Officer, School Resource Officer, and Patrol Sergeant, prior to being elected Sheriff. Sheriff Crissey is still currently a certified instructor for D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education), RADAR (Radio Detection and Ranging) and LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging). Sheriff Crissey was previously an instructor for TASER, NARCAN, A.L.I.C.E. and a Field Training Officer.

A South Dakota native, Sheriff Crissey grew up south of Beresford and graduated from Beresford High School in 2005. He earned his Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Southeast Technical College in Sioux Falls and later completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice online through Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio.

Sheriff Crissey is deeply committed to community engagement and serves on multiple local and statewide boards and committees. His current board positions include being on the Boys & Girls Club of Yankton, Battle of the Badges, Yankton Contact Center, the sub-committee of the Dakota Territory Sheriff's Association (North & South Dakota), an at large position with the South Dakota Sheriff's Association and the Federal Bureau of Prisons Yankton Community Relations Committee.

He is also an active member of the local Fraternal Order of Police, a certified State Mentor for the South Dakota D.A.R.E. program, and a member of the South Dakota Sheriffs’ Association.

Sheriff Crissey remains committed to promoting safety, strengthening partnerships, and ensuring the well-being of the residents of Yankton County.
